This informal inner-city garden provides habitat for local pollinators and beneficial insects while showcasing the beauty of California native and select zone-friendly plants. Garden Butterfly-South Central L.A. is an inviting gathering space for family and friends, and serves as a teaching garden for neighbors and invited guests. Garden design elements include rounded and irregular stones, potted plants, and a vegetable and herb garden. Succulent pocket gardens and cheerful plantings provide sensory delight and year-round displays of foliage and form.

This is my lab. I just plant for pollinators in mind. When you plant for pollinators, you’re bringing in those native plants. The plants that we have planted here, the ceanothus, mallow, and there’s a sea of yarrow plants here that do attract the butterflies. We live in a Mediterranean climate, so we can incorporate plants from the other regions that are not invasive. That’s the thing, non-invasive plants do work well with natives, and I’ve successfully done that. So, in this garden, we have hummingbirds, butterflies, and also the beneficial insects.”
