The LAX Dunes are the largest coastal dune system in Southern California, all that remains from a system once comprising 23,000 acres from Palos Verdes to Santa Monica. The area includes a northern 48-acre section, a central 52-acre section, and a 203-acre El Segundo Blue Butterfly Preserve in the south, all owned by Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA). LAWA, along with project partners: The Bay Foundation, Coastal Restoration Consultants, and California Botanic Garden, are working to restore the northern 48- acres to support the estimated 900 species of plants and wildlife that call this site home.
