Casita Manzanita
Sunday April 24 | 10am - 5PM
Private Residence
Design & Care: Jay Shields (resident)
Garden Size: 1,600 sq. ft., front/back
Started: 1995
We view our garden as an ongoing experiment in small open space habitat preservation in the midst of increasing urban density. The coastal-sage-based front garden consists of sages and buckwheats highlighted with colorful globe mallows, coral bells, and penstemons, all under the canopy of a mature big berry manzanita. A permeable path along a ceanothus and ironwood hedge leads to the back garden where a sprawling palo verde provides shade for an outdoor room. Adjacent, a millstone water feature, visited by 37-and-counting bird species, is surrounded by a seasonal bulb meadow of wild onion, triplet lilies, blue dicks, and mariposa lilies.
