The native garden of Casa Apocalyptica was started in 2008. It was originally inspired by towering manzanitas (Arctostaphylos viscida) on a family member’s ranch. We call the style “California apocalyptic.” The plants grow among rubble, rusty tools, and detritus, mostly recycled from the project site. It’s meant to evoke a future where the people are gone and the native ecology has taken the land back. The garden has expanded like the Winchester Mystery House to include multiple levels and habitats, as well as the front yards of the houses on either side of us.
Notable Plants

Madrone (Arbutus menziesii)
Mama Bear Manzanita (Arctostaphylos ‘Mama Bear’)
Brodiaeas (Brodiaea spp.)
Mariposa Lillies (Calochortus spp.)
Fritillaries (Fritillaria spp.)
