Garden Size: 2,500 sq. ft., front/back
Started: 2017
This garden is intended to demonstrate how California native plants can be used in a formal design with a simplified plant palette. Anchored by a specimen tree (Chilopsis/catalpa), the front yard is dominated by a 1,200-square-foot expanse of “Blond Ambition” grama grass and organized with linear arrangements of buckwheat and sage. The simple plant palette has been enriched this year with re-plantings of Douglas iris. The back yard features a mature stand of Dr. Hurd manzanita set in a 500-square-foot field of sand dune sedge. A magnificent example of Davis gold toyon graces the large planter.
Notable Plants

California Buckeye (Aesculus californica)
Grama Grasses (Bouteloua spp.)
Sulphur Buckwheat (Eriogonum umbellatum)
Davis Gold Toyon (Heteromeles arbutifolia ‘Davis Gold’)
